LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's soccer team scored one goal in each half en route to a 2-0 shutout of Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Field on the UCSD campus. With the win the Tritons improve to 8-2-1 overall and 5-2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Otters fall to 6-6-0 overall and 3-5-0 in league action.
Matt Davey netted his eighth goal of the year at the 39:40 mark of the first half on a penalty kick after Grant Nishio was shoved from behind in the penalty box. The penalty kick was the third on the season for Davey and the second in as many games.
After taking the 1-0 lead into intermission the Tritons came out quickly and doubled its lead as Davey rocketed a ball past CSUMB netminder Bobby Arteaga at the 46:56 mark from 10 yards out. He was fed off a throw in pass from Dustin Tannenhuas that was flicked on by Tom Caplan.
UCSD goalkeeper Edward Ruhland played the first 83 minutes of the match and posted two saves while lowering his goals-against average on the season down to a miniscule 0.47 average. Luis Salazar played the final seven minutes to secure the team's sixth shutout of the season as the Tritons have now out-scored their opponents by a 20-5 margin on the season.
The game was marred by 27 fouls, 19 of which were whistled on the Otters. 10 cards were assessed in the match, two to the Tritons and the other eight to CSUMB. Jake True and Stephen Lopez each were carded twice, resulting in a red card ejection late in the second half.
