SAN DIEGO — The 2025 UC San Diego men's tennis season kicks off on Saturday with a crosstown doubleheader at San Diego State. The first match begins at 10 a.m. from the Aztec Tennis Center, with the second contest getting underway at 3 p.m.
Â
Saturday's season opener also marks the first dual match for the Tritons since concluding the transition to NCAA Division I. UC San Diego is now fully postseason eligible after a four-year process that saw the Tritons only compete in regular season contests.
Â
Head coach
Timmer Willing returns for his 13th season at the helm of the men's tennis team and 24th overall with UC San Diego. Willing has eight players back from last season's team that picked up nine wins, the program's most since the Division I transition began in 2020-21. Three freshmen, including two from San Diego, complete the 11-man roster.

Â
WHY THE TRITONS?
The Triton is described as the offspring of Poseidon and Amphitrite, a demigod of the sea with a lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior. Given UC San Diego's close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Triton became our mascot in 1964.
