MERCER LAKE, N.J. – The UC San Diego men's rowing team wrapped up action at the IRA Championships this morning. It was another overcast day at Mercer Lake as the Varsity 8 competed in the fourth-level final, while the Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 took part in their respective third-level finals.
VARSITY 8
The Varsity 8 raced in lane six for the fourth-level final. UC San Diego was pitted against Hobart, Holy Cross, Marist, Saint Joseph's, and Trinity. The Tritons were familiar with Holy Cross and Marist from Semifinal D yesterday, as they were the three squads to advance to the fourth-level final.
Holy Cross, who finished first in the semifinal as well, claimed the top spot again. Saint Joseph's and Hobart rounded out the top three. Marist followed, and the Tritons claimed fifth as they crossed the finish line with a time of 6:29.817. The Tritons finished with open water between them and Trinity, who took sixth.
SECOND VARSITY 8
The Second Varsity 8 competed out of lane six in the third-level final. UC San Diego was up against Drexel, Hobart, Holy Cross, Temple, and Williams. Drexel won by open water and Temple had control on second place, but it was a close fight for the final four spots.
UC San Diego was on Hobart's heels at the end, but Hobart finished a little over a second ahead of the Tritons. The Tritons turned in a time of 6:50.823 to finish just over a second before Holy Cross and Williams, respectively, who had less than half a second separating them.
The Tritons' fourth-place finish was their highest finish ever in a third-level final with three or more competitors.
VARSITY 4
The Varsity 4, who completed yesterday's time trial before the Varsity 4 semifinals were cancelled due to weather, took part in today's third-level final. Racing in lane seven, UC San Diego faced Colgate, George Washington, Mercyhurst, Princeton, and Stanford.
The Tritons finished the race with a mark of 7:44.623 for sixth place. The order of finish was Stanford, Mercyhurst, George Washington, Colgate, Princeton, and UC San Diego.
FINAL RESULTS
At the conclusion of the IRA Championships, the IRA released its Ten Eyck Trophy and Chapman Award Standings. The Tritons finished 22nd in the Ten Eyck Trophy standings with 100 points, as well as 14th in the Chapman Award standings with 100 points.

About UC San Diego Athletics
After two decades as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics program began a new era in 2020 as a member of the Big West Conference in NCAA Division I. The 23-sport Tritons earned 30 team and nearly 150 individual national championships during its time in Divisions III and II and helped guide 1,400 scholar-athletes to All-America honors. A total of 83 Tritons have earned Academic All-America accolades, while 38 have received prestigious NCAA Post Graduate Scholarships. UC San Diego scholar-athletes exemplify the academic ideals of one of the world's preeminent institutions, graduating at an average rate of 91 percent, one of the highest rates among institutions at all divisions.
Return To Sport… Safely
In order for UC San Diego scholar-athletes to be permitted to return to training and competition safely and within federal, state, local and university guidelines, the athletic department implemented a number of measures designed to complement and enhance the university's highly-successful Return To Learn program. Notable actions include being physically distanced when practical, including during out-of-season training sessions; wearing masks, except when undergoing physically strenuous exercise; and maintaining proper hygiene. Athletes, coaches and staff are testing at a higher frequency than the campus population, teams adhere to CDC, NCAA and Big West Conference guidelines and department officials participate in regular meetings with conference and university-affiliated physicians and the UC San Diego emergency operations staff.
