The 17th-ranked University of California San Diego women's basketball team will travel to north county for the San Marcos Classic to officially get the 2016-17 season underway. The Tritons will face Montana State Billings on Friday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m. and No. 2 California Baptist on Saturday, Nov. 12, also at 5:30 p.m.

STANFORD RECAP
The Tritons fell behind early and could not recover, losing to Stanford in an exhibition by a final score of 85-41. Beth Mounier led UCSD with 11 points, shooting 44.4 percent (4-9) from the floor and 50 percent (3-6) from behind the arc. Junior guard Taylor Tanita dished out four assists and junior forward Dalayna Sampton grabbed six rebounds for the Tritons.

LAST SEASON
The Tritons went 26-5 during the 2015-16 season, taking home a share of the CCAA regular season crown with an 18-2 record in conference play. UCSD defeated Cal State East Bay and Azusa Pacific in the first two rounds of the NCAA West Regional, before getting knocked out by Alaska Anchorage in the regional finals, one game shy of reaching the national tournament. UCSD had four players named All-CCAA in Beth Mounier, Taylor Tanita, Jamie Katuna and Farrah Shokoor. Shokoor was named the conference's Player of the Year as well as All-American by the WBCA and CCA.

ABOUT THE YELLOWJACKETS
Montana State Billings went 21-11 in 2015-16 with a 15-5 record in the PacWest Conference. The Yellowjackets advanced to the NCAA West Regionals where they were sent home in the first round by Azusa Pacific. MSUB won two exhibition games against Rocky Mountain College and Montana Tech to get their season underway. Head coach kevin Woodin is in his 13th season as MSUB's head coach.
SERIES HISTORY
UCSD has never won against the Yellowjackets with an 0-3 record in the all-time series. The two teams met twice in 2002, with the Tritons losing both, 75-65 and 62-57.
ABOUT THE LANCERS
No. 2 California Baptist comes in with a 2-1 record, with wins against Simon Fraser and No. 3 West Texas A&M, and a loss to University of Mary. The Lancers went 29-3 last season, making to the NCAA West Regional semifinals before getting knocked out by Alaska Anchorage in overtime. Cassidy Mihalko leads CBU, averaging 22 points in three games this season. Kamille Diaz is the Lancers' second option, averaging 13.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game. Jarrod Olson is in his fifth season as head coach.
SERIES HISTORY
The Tritons hold a 3-16 all-time series record against CBU. UCSD defeated the Lancers in an exhibition, 83-74, the last time the two teams met.
CARLISLE PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH
Head coach Heidi VanDerveer promoted Chelsea Carlisle to the position of associate head coach prior to the start of the 2016-17 season. Carlisle enters her fifth year with the Triton coaching staff after a stellar four-year playing career as a UCSD student-athlete. She has helped the team to an 82-37 overall record and guided UCSD to the 2012-13 CCAA Tournament and 2015-16 CCAA regular season titles during her four years as an assistant coach. As a player, Carlisle was a three-time All-American and graduated as the school's all-time career leader in assists (575), while ranking second in both points (1,950) and steals (262). She graduated from UCSD in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in communication.
HEAD COACH HEIDI VANDERVEER
Heidi VanDerveer is in her fifth campaign as the head coach of the UCSD women's basketball team with an 82-37 overall record. Last year, VanDerveer led the Tritons to a 26-5 overall mark, taking home a share of the CCAA regular season crown with an 18-2 record in conference play. The Tritons qualified the NCAA Division II postseason for the ninth time since 2000-01 and advanced all the way to the West Regional title game. In her first year with the team, UCSD finished with a 22-11 record overall and placed second in the conference at 17-5. The Tritons won their first-ever league tournament title. Prior to coming to La Jolla, VanDerveer spent four seasons at Division III Occidental, where she compiled an impressive 83-26 record and led the Tigers to four straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles. VanDerveer has also spent time as the head coach at Eastern Washington and San Francisco. She began her coaching career under Pat Summitt at Tennessee and spent 12 years working in the WNBA. In addition to her collegiate and professional experience, VanDerveer worked with USA Basketball as a scout for the 2006 World Championship team and the 2008 World Qualifying Tournament. She also served as a scout for the 2008 Olympic Team that won a gold medal in Beijing. VanDerveer graduated from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor's Degree in political science in 1986 and went on to earn her Master's in physical education and sports psychology from the University of Tennessee in 1988. She was a four-year letterwinner on the basketball team at Charleston and served as a team captain as a junior and a senior.
