Tritons Fall to Stanford in Exhibition, 85-41

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's basketball team fell behind early and could not recover, losing to Stanford in an exhibition by a final score of 85-41, Friday at Maples Pavilion. It marked the second time that the Tritons' Heidi VanDerveer squared off against her hall-of-fame sister Tara VanDerveer as head coaches.

Senior guard Beth Mounier led UCSD with 11 points, shooting 44.4 percent (4-9) from the floor and 50 percent (3-6) from behind the arc. Junior guard Taylor Tanita dished out four assists and junior forward Dalayna Sampton grabbed six rebounds for the Tritons.

Brittany McPhee was Stanford's leading scorer and rebounder with 19 and nine, respectively. Erica McCall and Shannon Coffee pitched in 16 and 14 points, respectively.

The Cardinal used their size to their advantage, outscoring the Tritons 50-8 in the paint and outrebounding them 59-25. UCSD shot 22.2 percent (14-63) compared to Stanford's 46.6 percent (30-65).

The Cardinal raced out to a 7-0 lead, but the Tritons answered back and closed it to two, 7-5, thanks to a three-pointer and mid-range jumper from Mounier. It would be the closest UCSD would get as Stanford went on a 6-0 run from there, en route to a 24-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Tritons could only muster a three-pointer from sophomore guard Joleen Yang in the second period and were outscored 20-3. UCSD trailed 44-18 at halftime.

The Cardinal did not let up in the second half, winning the third and fourth quarters 19-8 and 22-15, respectively. Stanford grabbed its biggest lead of the game with 37 seconds remaining at 85-41, which ended up being the final score.

The Tritons will officially open their regular season at the San Marcos Classic against Montana State Billings on Friday, Nov. 11 at 5:30 p.m. They will play California Baptist the following day on Saturday, Nov. 12, also at 5:30 p.m.
