SAN DIEGO - The UC San Diego women's rowing program competed in final day action at the San Diego Crew Classic Sunday on Mission Bay. The Tritons took on a host of NCAA Division I crews in Novice 8 and Collegiate 4+ B races.
UCSD's Novice 8, consisting of coxswain Allison Kubo, Kate Potts, Rachel Becker, Erika Assoun, Jaida Aikens, Aleksandra Boychenko, Helen Femmel, Angela Lee and Leslie Bernal, took sixth in the grand final with a time of 7:37.25.
San Diego won the race in 7:09.54. UCLA, Miami, Minnesota "A" and Sacramento State took second through fifth, respectively. The Tritons finished ahead of Minnesota's "B" boat.
"Today was an exciting day in many ways," said UCSD head coach Colin Truex. "The novices had a great race. Most of the competition they were up against had high school rowing experiance and for them, as true first year rowers, to be competitive was impressive. They are a strong and spirited group and I look forward to watching their development over the coming months and years."
In the Collegiate 4+ B final, the Triton contingent of coxswain Sara Leontis, Courtney Breslow, Lauren Van De Hey, Annie Hocking and Michaela Kazek crossed the finish line in 8:51.04 for seventh place.
USC won the race in 7:57.58 followed by San Diego, Duke, Sacramento State, UCLA and San Diego State.
"There was a lot of positive energy and excitement for the future of the program and we want to thank everyone that attended and supported us throughout the weekend," said Truex.
"Today was also great because, in front of many parents, alumni and athletics department administrators, we christened the newest addition to our racing fleet, 'Sweet Loraine'," added Truex.
UCSD's next race will be the Covered Bridge Regatta in Lowell, Ore., on April 11.
