WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Senior starting pitcher Trevor Scott and sophomore outfielder Jack Larsen of UC San Diego were named Tuesday as the 2015 season's first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 26-Feb. 1.
The duo guided No. 15 UCSD to a doubleheader sweep of West Region rival Western Oregon University on Opening Day Sunday at the newly-renovated Triton Ballpark.
Scott drew the start on the mound in UCSD's season opener for the first time in his four years as a Triton, and threw six complete, shutout frames, scattering four singles without a walk. He struck out seven, ultimately combining on the four-hit, 4-0 shutout with two teammates. The left-hander out of Laguna Niguel set Western Oregon down in order in the first, fourth and fifth. He struck out his last batter to end the sixth with runners at first and second in a 2-0 game.
Larsen was the offensive star. He went 3-for-4 with a career-best two doubles, two RBI and a run scored in the first game. His RBI double in the fifth gave the Tritons a 2-0 lead, with a run-scoring single in the seventh making it 3-0. The Mission Viejo product who started both games in right field then hit his second career home run, a solo shot pulled just inside the foul pole in right, with two gone in the fourth for a 6-0 advantage in an 8-3 UCSD victory in the seven-inning nightcap. Larsen was 1-for-4 and scored twice, completing the afternoon at 4-for-8 with a home run, two doubles, three RBI, three runs, and a 1.125 slugging percentage. Defensively, he added his first collegiate outfield assist, cutting down a runner at third base on one hop from right to end the third and keep the first game scoreless.
The weekly distinctions are the first for both Scott and Larsen in their careers. Former sluggers Justin Rahn and Nick La Face, now a first-year Triton assistant coach, were UCSD's only two honorees a season ago.
Having clinched the series victory on Monday night, UCSD concludes its season-opening four-game set with Western Oregon later Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Triton Ballpark. Entry is free.
