LA JOLLA, Calif. - In its final home match of the season Thursday, the UC San Diego men's tennis team defeated Point Loma Nazarene by a score of 7-2 at Northview Tennis Courts.
UCSD, which has won four of its last five matches, improved to 12-9 overall. After losing its third consecutive match, PLNU dropped to 7-14.
The Tritons took a 2-1 lead over the Sea Lions after winning two of three doubles match-ups. At No. 2, Max Jiganti and Kona Luu defeated Kaptan Kaster and Michael Zablan, 8-3. Mark Meyer and Teddy Truong had no issues in their No. 3 match against Dillon Brown and Daniel Milliken, picking up an 8-1 win.
Jiganti and Luu have won eight of their last 10 matches.
The first three singles matches to come off the courts went in the Tritons' favor. Luu's 6-2, 6-3 victory over Milliken at No. 4 clinched the win for UCSD.
In the No. 1 singles contest, senior Camill Salomon, ranked 30th nationally, dispatched Brooks Baldinger by scores of 7-6 and 6-4.
Also winning their singles tilts were Jiganti at No. 2, Horea Porutiu at No. 5 and Devon Sousa at No. 6. Jiganti, 13-5 overall, has won seven straight and nine of his last 10 matches, while Porutiu upped his season mark to 11-3.
All of the Tritons' singles wins came in straight sets.
"We started off a little slow and sluggish in doubles," said UCSD head coach Timmer Willing. "However, we turned it around quickly and the guys took care of business. Nobody got too excited, nobody got too upset and we didn't panic."
UCSD plays its final regular season match at Division I UC Irvine on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. The team will host an alumni event at North Courts on Saturday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m.
