UCSD Routs No. 29 Cal State Monterey Bay, 10-1

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego totaled 12 hits while Ryan Goodbrand and Justin Burns held No. 29 Cal State Monterey Bay scoreless through eight innings as the Tritons picked up a 10-1 league victory Friday night at Triton Ballpark.

UCSD scored single runs in the first and fifth innings, three runs in the fourth and another five in the seventh inning. CSUMB avoided the shutout by scoring its run in the ninth.

With the win, UCSD improved to 9-12 overall and moved over .500 in the California Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAA) at 7-6. CSUSM fell to 12-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play.

Goodbrand (3-0) tossed six innings of scoreless ball, scattering three hits while striking out three and walking only one. The junior transfer has gone six-plus innings in five of his six starts this season.

Where Goodbrand left off, Burns picked it right back up, stifling the Otter offense over the seventh and eighth innings. He gave up just one hit and struck out three, retiring the side in order in the seventh.

At the plate, center fielder Danny Susdorf was 2-for-2 with a RBI and two walks. The leadoff batter crossed the plate three times and swiped a pair of bases, his team-leading 11th and 12th steals of the year.

Hitting just behind Susdorf in the lineup, outfielder Gregg Ringold also had two hits, scored a run and knocked in two runs. Third baseman Ryan O'Malley was 2-for-3 with a run and designated hitter Nick La Face scored twice and drove in a pair.

With one out in the fourth inning, La Face walked, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a ground out. Catcher Brett Levy singled to plate La Face, the eventual game-winning run. First baseman Richard Seigel came to the plate and crushed a line drive well over the right field fence to put the Tritons up by a score of 4-0. It was Seigel's team-leading third long ball.

In the seventh, Susdorf, Ringold and outfielder Scott Liske all picked up an RBI, while La Face doubled to left-center to drive in two.

Right fielder Tommy George led off the top of the ninth with a single back up the middle. He took second base on a ground ball out before Triton reliever Sean Rowan struck out the next batter. Catcher Jesse Olson then singled to right field and George came around for the Otters' lone run of the game.

Starter Donny Medlinger took his first loss of the season to drop to 3-1. He gave up five runs on five hits, struck out four and walked four over five innings. Reliever Steven Farnworth also gave up five runs on six hits over the last three innings.

Cal State Monterey Bay left nine runners on base while UC San Diego stranded just two.

"This was a great team win, we competed well in all phases of the game against a good Cal State Monterey Bay team," said first-year UCSD head coach Eric Newman. "We need to build on that win and continue to improve moving forward."

The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday with the first game slated for noon at Triton Ballpark. The four-game series concludes with a single game at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
