UC SAN DIEGO ATHLETIC UPDATE (February 14, 2011)

Baseball UCSD

Season-High 18 Hits Lead No. 17 UCSD to 18-1 Rout of Cal State Stanislaus

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Seven Tritons had multiple hits and the Warriors were held to one run for the third consecutive game as 17th-ranked UC San Diego routed Cal State Stanislaus, 18-1, Sunday. UCSD swept the series against Stanislaus, winning all four games at Triton Ballpark.

The Tritons banged out 18 total hits, including five doubles and two home runs, en route to winning their seventh staight game and improving to 28-12 overall and 21-11 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Warriors fell to 18-17 overall and 12-16 in the league and have lost their last seven games. UCSD won both ends of a doubleheader Saturday by a score of 2-1 and gave up just two runs to CSUS in Friday's series opener. It was the first CCAA series sweep for UCSD this season.

The Tritons' run and hit totals were both season highs. The last time UC San Diego scored more than 18 runs was Apr. 30, 2010 in a 19-3 victory at San Francisco State. That was also the last time the team booked over 18 hits as it produced 24 against the Gators.

UCSD scored four runs in each of the third, sixth and seventh innings, while CSUS talllied its lone run in the top of the sixth.

Leading the way at the plate was infielder Evan Kehoe, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI. The senior, who's chasing several school records, had a double and a home run. The long ball to left drove in three of four runs scored by the Tritons in the sixth inning. Kehoe currently has 292 hits and needs 38 to break the school record of 329. He's amassed 61 career doubles and needs five more to own that record. In the RBI department, Kehoe has 183 for his career, 26 short of the record.

Left fielder Aaron Bauman and infielder Matt Hubbard each had three hits for UCSD. Bauman also homered in the sixth, a solo bomb over the center field fence. Hubbard finished with a pair of RBI. Center fielder Danny Susdorf, left fielder Scott Liske, designated hitter Nick La Face and shortstop Grant Bauer all had two hits each for the Tritons.

Not to be lost among all of the offense, starting pitcher Jeff Rauh threw a solid five innings to improve to 2-2. He gave up just the one run on three hits and struck out three while walking four. Eric Abraham, Daniel Simmons and Greg Selarz combined for four scoreless innings to finish the game.

Cal State Stanislaus used six pitchers in the game. Starter Kory Wallace (2-5) took the loss, surrendering five runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings. All six hurlers gave up at least one run and one hit.

Of UCSD's 18 runs, 14 were earned as Stanislaus made four errors in the field. The Warriors had an up-and-down series defensively as they totaled nine errors, but also made several brilliant plays in the field over the weekend.

Chico State went 3-1 over the weekend against Cal State L.A. to maintain its lead in the CCAA with a 19-7 record. UCSD sits in second with its 21-11 league mark and Sonoma State is third at 19-12.

UCSD hosts a two-game series against non-conference opponent Academy of Art on Friday, Apr. 22 and Saturday, Apr. 23. Friday's game is under the Triton Ballpark lights with a 6 p.m. start, while Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for noon. Tickets for all home games are available at Triton Ballpark beginning one hour prior to the start. UCSD students are admitted free with a valid ID.
