No. 10 UCSD Out-Hits Cal State L.A. but Drops Third Straight, 7-4

LOS ANGELES - The 10th-ranked UCSD baseball team lost its third straight game Friday as it out-hit host Cal State L.A. but ended up falling, 7-4, in CCAA action at Reeder Field. It was the second of a four-game series between the two teams.

Cal State L.A. (19-11, 14-8 CCAA) never trailed as it scored twice in the first inning and added three more in the fifth to essentially clinch the win. UC San Diego (20-10,13-9 CCAA) out-hit its opponent, 11-9, and mounted a comeback in the ninth inning that spawned two runs, but ended up dropping its third consecutive game for the first time since April of 2009.

Golden Eagle starter David Arredondo (3-2) turned a solid outing on the hill, going 8.2 innings. He gave up four runs (three earned) on 11 hits, struck out four and walked none. Thomas Landeros came on to get the final out and record his fifth save of the year.

UCSD's Guido Knudson (3-3) struggled, giving up six runs on nine hits over five innings of work. He did strike out five Golden Eagle batters. Justin Burns, Taylor Austin and Tony York threw the final three innings with Austin giving up a single unearned run in the seventh.

The UCSD outfield combined for seven of the team's 11 hits. Right fielder Kyle Saul had two hits, two runs and a RBI, while left fielder Aaron Bauman went 3-for-5 and center fielder Danny Susdorf had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Catcher Kellen Lee extended his hit streak to four games with a base hit.

The Tritons left nine runners on base in the game.

CSULA's outfield also had a productive game. Left fielder Chad Nacapoy and right fielder Cliff Quick each had two hits and scored two runs, while center fielder Joe Park had two hits and scored a run. Catcher Brian Compton totaled three RBI.

"Every game is a dogfight in this conference," said UCSD head coach Dan O'Brien. "And if you can't take a few punches, you can't be a champion."

In the bottom of the first inning, Cal State L.A. plated two runs as Nacapoy doubled down the left field line with one out. Quick singled, moving Nacapoy to third. With runners at the corners, Compton smacked a two-run double to left-center to give the early lead to the Eagles.

The Tritons scored a run in the third after Saul doubled and scored from second on a throwing error by Arredondo.

In the top of the fifth, CSULA loaded the bases with one out after three straight singles. The first run scored as first baseman Noe Flores was hit by a Knudson offering. The second run crossed on a balk and the third on a sacrifice fly, giving the Golden Eagles a 5-1 lead.

The teams traded runs in the sixth inning. A single by shortstop Garrett Tuck drove in DH Nick La Face, who had reached base after being hit by Arredondo. However, designated hitter David Compton had a quick answer, leading off the bottom half of the inning with a home run to left field.

Cal State L.A. took a 7-2 lead in the seventh. With two outs, Compton walked and took second on a wild pitch. He would score an unearned run on an error by the Triton infield.

After York retired the Golden Eagles in order in the bottom of the eighth, the Tritons went to work in the ninth. With one out, pinch hitter Scott Liske was hit by a pitch. The next batter popped up for the second out of the inning. Saul came to the plate and laced a double to right-center that scored Liske. Susdorf followed with an RBI single to get UCSD within three runs at 7-4. Bauman kept the rally going with a single. However, with two runners on, Landeros came in and got La Face to fly out to end the game.

The Golden Eagles won Thursday's opener in Los Angeles, 5-4, so UCSD is now 3-6 away from home this season.

The series moves to Triton Ballpark in La Jolla for a Saturday, Apr. 2, doubleheader starting at noon. Tickets are available at the park and UCSD students are admitted free with a valid ID.
