LA JOLLA, Calif. - A 10-run eighth inning led the No. 3 UC San Diego baseball team to a 13-3 win over San Francisco State Sunday in CCAA action at Triton Ballpark.
With the game tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the eighth, UCSD (15-5, 8-4 CCAA) exploded for 10 runs on eight hits. Centerfielder Danny Susdorf and leftfielder Aaron Bauman led off the frame with back-to-back doubles. Bauman's scored Susdorf, the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run. Pinch hitter Nick La Face hit a three-run double in the inning, picking up the first runs batted in of his career.
Susdorf had a memorable day, tying career-highs with four hits and three runs. Second baseman Blake Tagmyer went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. He hit the second home run of his season, a two-run job to right in the first inning.
Freshman shortstop Garrett Tuck singled in the second inning to improve his team-best hit streak to 10 games.
Neither starting pitcher got a decision. For UCSD, Greg Selarz went 4.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out four. Reliever Elias Tuma threw 3.1 innings and improved to 2-0 with the victory. SFSU's (6-8, 1-7 CCAA) Jeff Clegg lasted just one inning as he gave up three runs on four Triton hits.
Kevin Dultz (0-1), who started the game at catcher, took the loss as the fourth of five pitchers that the Gators used. After being removed from the mound, Dultz finished out the game at first base.
Designated hitter Matthew Cummins, Dultz and centerfielder Ben Mielke all had two hits for SFSU.
UCSD led 3-1 after one inning of play. The Gators plated two runs in the fourth to tie the game as Cummins doubled to left center, knocking in a pair.
UCSD had season-high 15 hits in the game and totaled 47 over the four-game series. The Tritons won three of the four games.
The 13 runs were the most scored by UC San Diego since Apr. 30, 2010 when they defeated San Francisco State, 19-3, in San Francisco.
Up next for UCSD is a four-game set against CCAA opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills. Single games will be played in Carson on Thursday, Mar. 10 and Friday, Mar. 11 and Triton Ballpark will host a noon doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 12.
