CARSON, Calif. - A three-run home run by Cal State Dominguez Hills in the fifth inning opened up a tight game and No. 3 UC San Diego fell, 8-2, in CCAA baseball action Friday afternoon at Toro Field.
From the start, it looked like it was going to be a close affair as both teams scored a run in the first inning and it was 3-2 in favor of the Toros after four complete. However, with one out and two runners on in the bottom of the fifth, shortstop Abel Medina homered to right field, giving Dominguez Hills a 6-2 lead.
The Toros tacked on two more runs in the seventh, while the Tritons had just one hit after the fifth inning.
Outfielder Danny Susdorf went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored a run for UCSD, which fell to 15-7 overall and 8-6 in the CCAA. Second baseman Blake Tagmyer, the West Region and CCAA Player of the Week, was 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI as the Tritons totaled seven hits.
Starter Guido Knudson (3-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits over six innings. Knudson walked four and struck out one. Tony York, who came on in relief to start the seventh, gave up the other two Toro runs. Eric Abraham and Richard Kilbury combined for two scoreless innings to finish the game.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, which defeated UCSD, 4-3, Thursday, improved to 8-13 overall and 4-10 in league. Josh Corrales upped his record to 2-1 with the win. He went seven innings and gave up both UCSD runs (one earned) on six hits. Corrales struck out five and walked one.
Medina was clearly the player of the game, finishing 3-for-4 with a run and five RBI. It was the first home run given up by a Triton pitcher this season.
For the second straight day, the Tritons threatened in the ninth inning. They loaded the bases with no hits as Tagmyer and left fielder Evan Kehoe both walked. With two outs, pinch hitter Gregg Ringold walked to pack the bases. An ensuing foul out to third ended the rally and the game.
UCSD left a total of seven runners on base in the game.
The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday in La Jolla at Triton Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
Tickets for all home games are available at Triton Ballpark beginning one hour prior to start time. UCSD students are admitted free with a valid ID.
