LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 1 UCSD baseball team went 3-1 in its two-day series against CCAA opponent Cal State East Bay after splitting a doubleheader Sunday at Triton Ballpark. The Pioneers took the first game, 8-4, while the Tritons rebounded to win the second, 7-2.
UCSD moved to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA, while Cal State East Bay is now 3-8 overall and 1-3 in league contests.
The Tritons belted out 12 hits in game two, one of them being the first collegiate home run for K.C. Rentfro. Greg Selarz upped his season record to 2-1 as he earned the victory in 5.2 innings of work. The junior transfer gave up two unearned runs and scattered seven hits while striking out four and walking one.
At the plate, right fielder Kyle Saul went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI out of the leadoff position. The entire Triton outfield was productive as centerfielder Danny Susdorf had three hits and a run batted in and left fielder Aaron Bauman knocked in a pair.
Cal State East Bay starter Zach Aguirre (0-2) lasted just 3.2 innings after giving up six runs on 10 hits. First baseman Andrew Woolfe and third baseman Nick McManus each had two hits for the Pioneers.
UCSD wasted no time getting on the board as a two-out single through the left side of the infield by third baseman Evan Kehoe scored Saul, who had reached earlier with a base hit of his own.
The Tritons tacked on two more runs in the third. Shortstop Garrett Tuck led off with a single and Saul followed with a bunt base hit. Susdorf sacrificed both runners up a base to set the table for Bauman, who sent a ground ball single down the left field line that scored both runners.
Bauman is off to a hot start as he's had at least one hit in 11 of 12 games and currently holds a five-game hit streak. He leads the Tritons with a .356 batting average.
Already up 3-0, UCSD struck for another three runs in the fourth. Saul knocked in the first with his second bunt base hit. Susdorf singled in a run and the third was scored on a balk.
The Pioneers got two runs back in the fifth. The leadoff batter reached on an error and two consecutive hits - a double and a single - plated the first CSUEB run. The next batter reached on an error and Woolfe scored on the play.
In the bottom half of the fifth, the first two Triton batters went down in order, bringing Rentfro, the designated hitter, to the plate. He proceeded to launch a bomb over the fence in left center field, putting UCSD up 7-2. Rentfro was a redshirt with the Tritons in 2010.
The first game had UCSD leading, 3-1, after three innings. However, the Pioneers struck for four runs in the fourth. Four hits and a Triton error aided in the scoring, as did a double steal by Hector Iribe and Jake Davis. Iribe advanced to second and Davis scored on the play.
Only five of CSUEB's eight runs were earned.
Daniel Simmons took the loss, falling to 2-1 on the young season. He gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits in four innings. His counterpart, A.J. Gallardo (1-2) got the win, giving up four runs on five hits over six innings of work. Zachary Wong threw 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his first save.
Bauman, Tuck and first baseman Nick Hom each had two hits UCSD. Bauman tripled in two runs in the third inning.
For the Pioneers, Woolfe went 2-for-5 with two runs and DH Bret Gibson drove in two runs.
Saul hit .462 (6-for-13) for the series with four runs and five RBI. He doubled, tripled and walked three times over the weekend. Bauman finished with five hits, three runs scored and five RBI.
"We played, in the first game today, probably the worst game we've played in a number of years," said UCSD head coach Dan O'Brien. "And a lot of teams panic or start barking at each other, yelling at each other and today our guys did a good job of just staying composed and moving on to the next game. I really thought we played well in the second game."
After 12 consecutive home games, the Tritons take to the road to play at Cal State Monterey Bay Feb. 25-27. The Otters are 3-3 overall and haven't opened their CCAA season yet. Friday's first game in Seaside starts at 2 p.m., Saturday's doubleheader gets underway at 11 a.m. and Sunday's final game is set for an 11 a.m. first pitch. All games will be covered by Live Stats.
