STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team batted around and used a five-run first inning en route to an 8-5 victory over No. 29 Chico State in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament on Thursday night. UCSD had six hits in the first inning and five different Tritons drove in runs.
Robert Sedin had a key two-out RBI single to give UCSD a pair of insurance runs.
Tim Shibuya earned the win pitching seven strong innings. UCSD advances to the CCAA Tournament semifinals against No. 25 Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Klein Family Field in Stockton.
With the win, UCSD improves to 46-6 while Chico State drops to 34-17.
Danny Susdorf led six different Tritons with multiple hits. Susdorf finished the night going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, including his second homerun of the year. Kellen Lee, Evan Kehoe, Brandon Gregorich, Kyle Saul and Vance Albitz had two hits apiece.
Shibuya improved to 11-2 on the year, tying the school record for wins in a single season. Shibuya went seven innings, allowed seven hits, two runs, walked one and struck out five.
Out of the bullpen, Daniel Simmons retired all four batters he faced, including two strikeouts to earn his third save of the year.
In UCSD's six hit first inning, Albitz and Saul led off with wingles. Gregorich, Kehoe, Susdorf, Lee and Bauer all had RBI in a five-run first inning.
Chico State scored a run in the third inning but had runners on first and second with no outs. Shibuya went on to strike out the side to keep the Tritons ahead 5-2 throught three and a half.
Sedin had his big two-out two-RBI single in the fifth to give the Tritons a 7-2 edge.
Susdorf added a solo homerun to give the Tritons an 8-2 lead in the seventh.
Chico State pulled within 8-5 in the eighth inning by scoring three runs, but the rally was quieted by Simmons who ended the Wildcat threat and continued to shutout Chico State in the ninth.
The loss went to Chico State's Michael Gleason who dropped to 7-2.
UCSD will take on CSUDH who was an earlier winner during the day, defeating Cal State San Bernardino by the same 8-5 score.
The Tritons and Toros will square off at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, with the winner advancing to the CCAA Championship game on Saturday.
