SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The 2nd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team scored runs in 8-of-9 innings and pounded out 24 hits en route to a 19-3 victory over San Francisco State on Friday afternoon at Maloney Field. UCSD wasted no time in getting career win No. 400 for head coach
Dan O'Brien.
Vance Albitz,
Kyle Saul,
Danny Susdorf and
Kellen Lee had four hits apiece, while
Tim Shibuya improved to 10-2 on the year. With the win, UCSD improves to 42-6, 32-5 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while San Francisco State drops to 22-29, 15-12 CCAA.
O'Brien, in his 13th-season at the helm, is now 400-266-1 (.603) in his Triton career.
The Tritons jumped on SFSU early and often, scoring runs in every inning but the fourth. Susdorf had two singles and two doubles in his first four at-bats, driving in three RBI. Susdorf was outdone by Lee, however, as the catcher went 4-for-4 with five RBI. Saul hit a homerun with one of his four hits on the afternoon.
UCSD batted around three times (fifth, seventh and ninth innings) and turned four double plays.
Brandon Gregorich, who entered the game hitting .485, had a quiet day at the plate going 1-for-6, but extended his hitting streak to 16 games with an RBI double. Gregorich did have two RBI on the day, giving him 72 RBI on the year. The senior first baseman entered the week No. 2 in the nation in sac fly RBI, and his first-inning sac fly RBI moved him up into a tie for the national lead.
Gregorich is now up to 84 hits this season, trailing Albitz' single season record of 86 hits.
Aaron Bauman went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases, while Grant Bauer, Conor Coleman and Robert Sedin also had hits. Sedin finished with three RBI.
Shibuya went six innings, allowing three runs, but just one earned run. He struck out three, walked one and scattered seven hits.
Out of the bullpen, Taylor Austin pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit. Elias Tuma finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
The loss went to SFSU's Spencer Kreisberg who dropped to 3-7 on the year. Kreisberg gave up 14 hits and nine earned runs. UCSD scored eight more runs off the Gator bullpen.
UCSD and SFSU return to the field on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. on the Gator campus.
