No. 1 UC San Diego Splits With Cal State San Bernardino On Saturday

LA JOLLA, Calif. -The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team split a doubleheader against Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. UCSD scored 10 runs in the seventh and eighth inning in the first game to capture a 12-1 victory. Matt Rossman improved to 7-0 on the year. In the second game, the Coyotes scored an important insurance run in the seventh inning and withstood a UCSD rally in its final at-bat as CSUSB won game two 3-2. UCSD trailed by two runs in the final frame, and had the potential tying run at third with one out, but could not get the run home. UCSD is now 30-5, 20-4 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while CSUSB is now 18-13, 17-11 CCAA.

In the first game, Robert Sedin gave UCSD the first runs of the game on a two-out two-RBI single and UCSD led 2-0. Leading 2-1 in the seventh, the Tritons scored four times in the seventh on six hits. In the eighth inning, UCSD would add six more runs on another six hits to put the game away.

In the first game, Brandon Gregorich went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Vance Albitz, Kyle Saul, Evan Kehoe, Sedin and Grant Bauer all had two hits apiece. Kehoe also hit a homerun in the eighth inning.

Rossman went 8.0 innings, scattered eight hits, gave up one run, walked none and struck out six. Richard Kilbury finished up with a scoreless ninth frame, striking out two.

In the second game, a seven-inning game, CSUSB scored first while the Tritons got a run on Aaron Bauman's solo homerun. The score would remain tied until CSUSB scored solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take a 3-1 lead.

In UCSD's final at-bat, Bauman led off with a walk and Gregorich singled to put two on. Chris Fung had a pinch hit sac bunt but a fielding error by the pitcher loaded the bases with no outs. Tagmyer got the job done with a sac fly to center field, scoring Bauman and advancing Gregorich to third. The next two UCSD hitters were retired however, one on a strikeout and another on an infield pop out.

Daniel Stenavich earned the win while Andrew Schile got the final two outs for the save.

Guido Knudson took the loss to drop to 5-2 on the year.

UCSD is back in action with a four-game road trip to Cal State Stanislaus. UCSD and CSUS take the field on Friday with a first pitch set for 3:00 p.m. in Turlock.
