POMONA, Calif. - The No. 30 UC San Diego men's tennis team tallied a 7-2 road victory on Thursday over No. 45 Cal Poly Pomona. The match concluded the Tritons' regular season competition at the Division II level and regionally, UCSD has posted an 8-3 mark.
Having defeated CPP on March 2 by the same score, Thursday's result wrapped up the sweep of the season series for the Tritons. UCSD now stands at 12-10 overall, with one regular season match remaining - a 12 p.m. road contest next Thursday against Division I UC Riverside.
Although the Broncos held pregame festivities for their squad's seniors, the Tritons put a damper on the celebration by pulling out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match. At the No. 1 spot, the newly formed pair of Erik Elliott and Chapman Chan shutout CPP's Salvador Romero and Kevin Singer, 8-0. The win evened Elliott and Chan's record at 4-4 as a duo.
Elliott continued his winning ways in singles, where he took down the Broncos' Joshua Lau in a hard-fought battle at the No. 1 position, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
UCSD junior Jake Fellow also put together a two-victory afternoon. He started out the day by picking up an 8-6 doubles win at the No. 3 spot with partner Sam Ling. In the singles portion, Fellow defeated Singer handily, 6-3, 6-1.
The Tritons, currently ranked third in the region, aim to be selected as one of the four teams from the West that will advance into the NCAA Division II postseason that begins May 8. The announcement of the tournament field is expected to be made on April 28.
