SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team saw its 19-game winning streak come to an end in a 4-3 loss to Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday afternoon at Fiscalini Field. After spotting CSUSB three runs in the third, UCSD came back in the top half of the inning to score three runs and tie it up. A CSUSB sac fly in the seventh, plated the winning run for the Coyotes. UCSD did not go down easily, loading the bases in the ninth before a groundball fielder's choice ended the threat. UCSD drops to 28-4, 18-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while CSUSB improves to 17-10, 16-9 CCAA.
The Tritons did manage to outhit CSUSB 9-8, but the Tritons left 10 runners on base, while CSUSB left seven on base. UCSD stranded two runners on in the sixth and seventh innings, and left the bases loaded in the ninth.
Of UCSD's four losses this season, two games have come by one run, while the other two came by two and three runs each.
Tim Shibuya suffered his first loss of the year, going 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs, three walks and striking out seven. Elias Tuma, Taylor Austin and Daniel Simmons finished up shutout baseball the rest of the way. Shibuya drops to 7-1 on the year.
CSUSB went with Aaron Brooks who earned the win to improve to 4-1. The 2009 CCAA Freshman of the Year went 8.2 innings, allowing nine hits, three runs, two walks and struck out four. Andrew Schile came on for the final out with the bases full of Tritons, earning his sixth save of the year.
After CSUSB scored three runs in the bottom of the third, the Tritons came back with three of their own in the top of the fourth.
Aaron Bauman led off the UCSD fourth with his fifth homerun of the year. With two on and two outs, Robert Sedin came through with the two-RBI single to tie the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, CSUSB had runners on second and third with one out. A fly ball to centerfield would plate the go-ahead run and the runner going from second to third was ruled out as the runner left early on the appeal. It was ruled the run did score before the out, so the Coyotes took the lead.
In the Tritons' final at-bat, Kellen Lee singled with one out. With two outs, Kyle Saul singled to put runners on the corners. Bauman was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and CSUSB went to its closer, Schile. Schile got the final out on a fielders choice to second base to end the game.
UCSD returns to the field on Friday to take on CSUSB. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Fiscalini Field.
