No. 1 UC San Diego Wins 19th Straight; Sweeps Cal Poly Pomona

LA JOLLA, Calif. -The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team completed a four-game sweep with two wins against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. Winners of 19 consecutive games, the Tritons jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and won the first game 11-0. Kirby St. John (6-1) pitched seven shutout innings in the win. In the second game, UCSD scored its runs in the first and second innings in the 5-2 win. Guido Knudson (5-1) earned the win, while Daniel Simmons earned his first save of the season. With the wins, UCSD improves to 28-3, 18-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while CPP drops to 17-16, 9-11 CCAA.

In the first game, Blake Tagmyer was the offensive power, hitting a three-RBI double in the first and a three-run homerun in the second inning. Tagmyer finished the day going 2-for-3 with six RBI.

UCSD had 13 hits in the game, as Tagmyer, Vance Albitz, Brandon Gregorich and Robert Sedin each had multi-hit games.

St. John went 7.0 innings allowing just four hits, no runs and struck out four. Richard Kilbury and Taylor Austin pitched the final two frames of shutout ball.

In the second game, Kyle Saul went 3-for-3 and singled, doubled and tripled, in that order. Saul did not get a fourth at-bat in the game, a chance to go for the cycle.

After CPP scored a run in the first inning, UCSD got three runs in the first, capped by an Evan Kehoe solo homerun. UCSD added two more runs in the second to lead 5-1.

CPP added a run in the sixth inning and had runners on the corners as Knudson exited and Taylor Austin got the final out in the sixth to end the threat and UCSD still up 5-2.

Simmons came on in the final frame and retired the side in order, striking out the final CPP hitter.

UCSD is back in action next week when it travels to Cal State San Bernardino. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, on the CSUSB campus.
