POMONA, Calif. -The No. 1 ranked UC San Diego baseball team got a complete-game from
Matt Rossman as the Tritons defeated Cal Poly Pomona 5-2 on Friday afternoon at Scolinos Field. After spotting the Broncos two runs in the first inning, UCSD responded with a five-run second-inning, capped by
Kyle Saul's two-run double. After a shaky first inning, Rossman was nearly perfect the rest of the way, shutting out the Broncos for the rest of the game in his second complete-game of the year. With the win, UCSD improves to 26-3, 16-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while CPP drops to 17-14, 9-9 CCAA.
Rossman improved to 6-0, going 9.0 innings, allowing just five hits, two runs and walking one while striking out seven. He recorded 12 outs by fly balls and five outs by ground balls.
While Rossman shutdown the Broncos the rest of the way, CPP's Casey Yokubaitis came on strong in relief, as UCSD did not score after it's five-run second inning. The Tritons only managed five hits the rest of the way.
Grant Bauer and Aaron Bauman had multi-hit games as Saul, Kellen Lee, Bauer and Danny Susdorf had RBI.
With a 2-0 lead in the four-game series, the teams will return to the field on Saturday for a doubleheader. First pitch of the first game is set for 12:00 p.m. at Triton Ballpark.
