LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 14th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team suffered a 30-18, 30-12, 30-20 sweep to No. 1 Stanford on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. Other than an early lead in the first set, the Tritons trailed throughout the match as Stanford outhit UCSD .527 - .031. The Cardinal also outblocked UCSD 12.0 - 3.5.
Frank Fritsch led the Tritons with 11 kills while
Jason Spangler added seven kills. Stanford was led by Brad Lawson and Evan Romero with 12 kills apiece. With the loss, UCSD drops to 7-15, 3-12 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while Stanford improves to 14-4, 11-4 MPSF.
Phil Bannan and Erik Sierks both saw action at setter with 12 assists apiece. Eight different Tritons recorded kills as Carl Eberts added four kills. Spangler added 10 digs to his seven kills. Calvin Ross came off the UCSD bench to record two blocks and a kill.
In the first set, the Cardinal hit at a .440 clip, which unfortunately for the Tritons, was the worst Stanford would hit all night. UCSD led 8-7 after a Fritsch kill, but Stanford quickly regained the lead by scoring eight of the next 11 points. Stanford won the set 30-18.
The second set was all Stanford as UCSD hurt themselves with 13 attack errors. Stanford hit .571 in the set and took a 20-5 advantage. Stanford would win the set 30-12 as UCSD hit at a negative percentage.
UCSD would record 11 kills in the third set and was within 12-10 after a Fritsch kill. Stanford scored eight of the next nine points to gain control of the set and put away the Tritons.
UCSD is back in action on Saturday night when it hosts Pacific at 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.
