No. 1 UC San Diego Wins School Record 16th Straight; Tritons Defeat Broncos 7-3

POMONA, Calif. - The 2010 UC San Diego baseball team now owns the longest winning streak in school history, as the No. 1 ranked Tritons defeated Cal Poly Pomona 7-3 on Thursday afternoon at Scolinos Field. The Tritons, winners of 16 straight, saw Evan Kehoe reach 200 career hits and drive in three RBI. Tim Shibuya turned in another solid start and improved to a league-leading 7-0 this season. Elias Tuma earned his third save of the season. UCSD improves to 25-3, 15-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Cal Poly Pomona drops to 17-13, 9-8 CCAA.

The Tritons led 4-1 through six innings as Grant Bauer had a key two-RBI double in the sixth. CPP would put two runners on in the eighth inning and chase Shibuya, but Tuma came in and got the final out.

UCSD scored three needed insurance runs in the ninth inning. Brandon Gregorich would reach on an error and would allow Vance Albitz to score. Kehoe followed with a big two-RBI single and put UCSD up 7-1.

CPP put runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth, but Tuma finished off the Broncos by surrendering just two RBI groundouts to close out the game at 7-3 UCSD.

Albitz finished the day going 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and a stolen base. Kehoe went 2-for-4 with three RBI, reaching 200 hits in this, his junior season. Blake Tagmyer also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Shibuya improved to 7-0 with 7.2 innings pitched, giving up seven hits, one run, walking three and striking out three.

At 25-3, the Tritons are closing in on the all-time best start in school history. The 1994 squad began the year 28-3 and finished the season at 33-8 overall.
