LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sophomores Tess Granath and Camille Gaito combined to hurl seven perfect innings as bookends to a doubleheader sweep Sunday for the UC San Diego softball team over visiting Cal State San Marcos.
The Tritons improve to 19-9 overall on the season, having won their last nine games. CSUSM, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), falls to 18-8 in 2010.
Granath started game one, throwing four innings and striking out four Cougars' hitters without allowing a baserunner. Senior Christine Zankich followed in the pitching order for the Tritons and closed out the 2-1 victory with three solid innings. The score remained 1-1 until UCSD's final turn at the plate, when an error committed by the CSUSM shortstop with two outs and the bases loaded helped the Tritons to victory.
Neither team was immune to errors Sunday as the two squads combined for eight in total. The Cougars committed five of the eight, with the mistakes hurting CSUSM's chances of salvaging a doubleheader split.
UCSD junior Brittany Sheats started game two and despite giving up a first-inning earned run, she finished with four solid innings in the circle. The Tritons' attack provided plenty of run support, plating five scores in the first and another three in the sixth. Gaito, owner of the lowest earned run average in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, picked up her first save of the season with three efficient innings. Without allowing a single baserunner, Gaito recorded six flyouts, two groundouts and a strikeout along the way.
The Tritons received contributions from many different parts of the lineup Sunday, with junior centerfielder Kris Lesovsky finishing with three hits on the day while Nicole Saari, Katie Belanger, Sarah Woofter and Nicole Spangler collected two apiece.
The UCSD squad will travel to Turlock, Calif., for the Mizuno Tournament of Champions held at Cal State Stanislaus starting Friday.
