Tritons Finish 13th At Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team finished 13th out of 17 teams competing at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic held Monday and Tuesday at the Arrowhead Country Club. The Tritons carded an opening round 296 to claim a share of ninth place, but finished with scores of 298 and 300 in the final two rounds to drop out of the top 10.

Junior Keith Okasaki was the Tritons' top individual finisher, carding a final score of 3-over par, 210. Okasaki saved his best golf for Tuesday's final round, carding a 1-under par, 69 to finish tied for 11th place. The Sacramento native shot a 70 and 74 in the first two rounds on the 6,510-yard, par-70 course.

Michael Neustadt was UCSD's next-highest finisher with a total score of 224 (74-75-75), while Richard Morris and Raj Samra rounded out the scoring for the Tritons at 229 (76-72-81) and 232 (76-77-79), respectively.

Fellow CCAA member Cal State Monterey Bay won the tournament with a final score of 848, following a 281 in the third round on Tuesday. The Otters held off Barry University and Chico State, which both finished with final tallies of 851. Sonoma State finished fourth at 854, while host Cal State San Bernardino took fifth with a three-round total of 860.

Individual medalist honors went to CSUSB's Gene Webster Jr., who finished with an impressive final score of 14-under par, 196 (69-63-64). Chico State's Sylvester Gama finished second at 7-under par, 203 (68-69-66), while Patrick Bauer of Sonoma State finished with a 1-under, 209 (68-72-69) to place third.

The first two rounds of the Coyote Classic were scheduled for Monday, but when the second round could not be completed, it had to be finished on Tuesday before the third and final round.

The Tritons will return to action with the 60th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate March 22-23 in Mission Viejo.
