UC San Diego Dips to Sixth After Second Round at The Big West Championship

LA QUINTA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team slipped from third to sixth following Monday's second round of The Big West Championship at La Quinta Ccountry Club in the Coachella Valley.

The Tritons shot four-over par on the par 72, 7060-yard course. Three players are among the top-20 in the 50-competitor field.

UC San Diego came into the day tied for third of 10 squads after finishing three-over in Sunday's opening round.

Senior Davis McDowell (-1) is tied for 10th, freshman Ethan Lien (even) is tied for 12th, and senior Nathan Tseng (+1) is tied for 20th. Outside the top-20 are senior Leo Cheng (+7) tied for 33rd and senior Francis Catalano (+8) tied for 38th.

Reigning Big West champion Long Beach State, ranked 28th in the latest national poll, remains atop the standings at 30-under par. The Beach went 18-under today and 12-under Sunday. Cal Poly and Hawai'i are tied for second at two-under. Those three teams are the only ones below par heading into Tuesday's third and final round.

Long Beach State's Steen Zeman continues to lead the field at 11-under. Jaden Huggins from Long Beach State and Dane Watanabe of Hawai'i are tied for second, both eight-below par.

Tuesday, UC San Diego will be paired with players from UC Irvine and UC Davis. Action gets going at 8 a.m.

Weather conditions were comfortable Monday with highs in the upper 70s and light wind for most of the round. Sunday got up to 90+ degrees with winds gusting to 30 miles per hour in the desert.

The team winner of The Big West Championship earns an automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Division I Championship. The individual medalist earns a place in the regional field if not a member of the winning team, nor on a team chosen for an at-large selection.

All action from La Quinta can be followed with live scoring.
