No. 2 UC San Diego Defeats Sonoma State 12-3; Tritons Up Winning Streak To 14 Games

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 2nd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team defeated Sonoma State 12-3 to record its first-ever four-game sweep against the Seawolves. Winners of 14 straight, the Tritons enter their week off with a two-game lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UCSD used a five-run third inning and had 15 hits on the day in defeating SSU. "Our guys are having success because they're playing the game the right way and getting after it day in and day out," said head coach Dan O'Brien. "It's not easy to do, but that's what it takes, and they're rising to that challenge," continued O'Brien. With the win, UCSD improves to 23-3, 14-2 CCAA while Sonoma State drops to 9-13, 2-10 CCAA.

After dropping its first two conference games to Chico State, UCSD has won 14 consecutive games, all coming against CCAA opponents.

Five different Tritons had multi-hit games, led by Brandon Gregorich who went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Gregorich leads the CCAA with 43 RBI in 26 games.

Vance Albitz, Kyle Saul, Evan Kehoe and Blake Tagmyer all had multiple hits. Tagmyer hit his second homerun in as many days and had three RBI in the game.

Kirby St. John earned the win to improve to 5-1. St. John went 5.1 innings, allowed four hits, one run and struck out three.

Elias Tuma and Daniel Simmons finished off the win with a combined 3.2 innings pitched.

In the UCSD third, Albitz had a two-RBI single for the game's first runs. Aaron Bauman and Gregorich also had RBI in the inning as UCSD grabbed the 5-0 lead.

Leading 6-2 in the seventh, the Tritons added two more runs as Gregorich led off with a double and scored on Kehoe's single. Matt Hubbard would add an RBI groundout and UCSD led 8-2.

The Tritons added four more insurance runs in the eighth inning on just two hits. With the bases loaded and no outs, Gregorich hit a sac fly for an RBI. Kehoe added an RBI before Tagmyer hit a two-run homerun to left and UCSD led 12-2.

Sonoma State added a run in the ninth with a homerun to close out the scoring at 12-3.

UCSD is off next week as it takes a break for final exams. UCSD resumes play when it travels to Cal Poly Pomona on March 25. The Tritons will play 16 of their final 24 games on the road.
