No. 2 UC San Diego Uses Final At-Bat Rally To Complete A Saturday Doubleheader Sweep Against SSU

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 2nd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team used a last at-bat rally to complete a doubleheader sweep against conference foe Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. After winning the first game 9-7, the Tritons trailed 3-2 heading into their final at-bat. UCSD got a leadoff single by Kyle Saul and would load the bases with the help of two SSU errors with no outs. After Kehoe reached on an error by the shortstop, Tagmyer singled up the middle for the game-winning RBI at 4-3 Tritons.

"Our guys found a way today, that's the bottom line," said head coach Dan O'Brien. "They showed great make up, battled all day... I'm proud of them," continued O'Brien.

With the wins, UCSD improves to 22-3, 13-2 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Sonoma State drops to 9-12, 2-9 CCAA.

In the second game of the doubleheader, SSU led 3-0 through four frames of the seven-inning game. Max Shupe had two of SSU's three hits in the game and all three RBI.

UCSD scored a single run in the fifth on Robert Sedin's homerun and a single run in the sixth on Nick Hom's RBI single. UCSD had a chance with two runners on in the sixth for more, but the Tritons' stranded two runners.

In the bottom half of the seventh frame, Saul beat out an infield chopper to third base and the throw went over the first baseman's head and allowed Saul to advance to second with no outs. Aaron Bauman followed with a walk and Brandon Gregorich beat out a single to shortstop and the bases were full of Tritons.

Kehoe followed with a chopper that was bobbled by the shortstop as Saul, who was running on contact, scored the tying run and the bases remained full.

Sonoma State brought its centerfielder to play behind second base, just on the outfield grass to try and induce a groundball force at the plate. Tagmyer hit a ground ball up the middle that was fielded by the centerfielder, but the throw was just late to the plate and Bauman scored the winning run at 4-3.

Guido Knudson got the win to improve to 4-1 on the year. Knudson enabled the Tritons to stay close, giving up just three hits, three runs and striking out six.

In the first game, the Tritons took advantage of three consecutive walks to start the game. Gregorich found the right center gap to clear the bases and UCSD led 3-1 after the first frame.

SSU tied the game in the fourth, only to see UCSD score four more runs in the sixth to take a 7-3 advantage. Hom had a big pinch-hit double in the inning.

UCSD added two more runs in the eighth inning as Tagmyer had a pinch-hit two-run homerun to rightfield and UCSD led 9-3.

With one out in the SSU ninth, Kyle Jones hit a grand slam to pull SSU within 9-7. Elias Tuma entered and got the final two outs of the game to earn his second save of the year.

Matt Rossman had an effective start improving to 5-0. Rossman went 6.0 innings, allowed eight hits, three runs and struck out three. Daniel Simmons looked strong in his stint, going 2.0 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out a hitter.

UC San Diego has now won 13 consecutive games heading into Sunday's series finale. UCSD and Sonoma State take the field on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch at Triton Ballpark.
