No. 3 UC San Diego Takes Two From Grand Canyon On Friday Afternoon

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 3rd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team got strong pitching on both ends of a doubleheader sweep against Grand Canyon on Friday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. UCSD took the first game 6-0 as Tim Shibuya pitched seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out eight. UCSD took advantage of three GCU errors to score five unearned runs. In the second game, the Triton bats came alive as UCSD had 15 hits and had three, four run innings in a 16-2 win. With the wins, UCSD has now won 13 consecutive games against GCU and the Tritons improve to 7-1 while the Antelopes drop to 3-3.

In the first game, Shibuya improved to 3-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.65 for the season. He faced two over the minimum in his seven frames as the Tritons turned two double plays.

Aaron Bauman went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Evan Kehoe had three hits while Brandon Gregorich had two hits.

UCSD scored three unearned runs in the fifth as Bauman and Gregorich hit back-to-back doubles with two outs. Kehoe continued the two-out rally with an RBI single to put UCSD ahead 5-0.

Sedin doubled with one out in the seventh and would score on Bauman's RBI single for UCSD's sixth run.

Daniel Simmons improved to 2-0 in the second game. Simmons went 4.1 innings, allowing one earned run, two hits, four walks and struck out five. Richard Kilbury, Eric Abraham and Austin Hill pitched shutout baseball to end the game.

Bauman delivered the big blast as UCSD trailed 3-2 in the third, but Bauman's homerun put UCSD back on top. Vance Albitz, Kyle Saul and Robert Sedin had two hits apiece in the game. UCSD scored four in the third, four in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull away.

Matt Hubbard hit a one out single to second base and Saul came around to score from second base on the play and UCSD grabbed the first run of the game.

GCU took its first lead of the day in the third inning with the help of an error and led 2-1 in the third.

With one out in the UCSD third, Bauman hit a two-run homerun to right field, his second of the year, and UCSD went back on top 3-2. With two outs, Sedin beat out a bunt to first base for an RBI single to put UCSD ahead 4-2. Saul would end up scoring UCSD's fifth run as Sedin got caught in a run down. Saul scored before the out and the Tritons led 5-2 through four innings.

With two outs in the UCSD fourth, the Tritons loaded the bases and Gregorich came through with a double to right center, clearing the bases and UCSD took an 8-2 lead. Evan Kehoe singled up the middle to drive in UCSD's fourth run of the inning and UCSD led 9-2.

In the UCSD fifth, Chris Fung tripled to right field for an RBI and UCSD scored its 10th run. Fung would score on a passed ball and UCSD led 11-2. UCSD would end the day with 16 runs on 15 hits.

UCSD is back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Grand Canyon. First pitch of the first game is set for 11:00 a.m. at Triton Ballpark.
