LA JOLLA, Calif. ?The UC San Diego baseball team won its seventh straight game before losing in the series finale against Cal State L.A. on Saturday afternoon at Reeder Field. UCSD won the first game by a 10-5 score as Garrett Imeson and Evan Kehoe keyed a rally and hit back-to-back homeruns. Sean Greer pitched six shutout innings out of the bullpen to earn the win. The second game was all Golden Eagles as CSULA scored 14 runs in the first two innings, en route to a 16-6 win. UCSD is now 10-4, 7-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while CSULA is 12-7, 5-3 CCAA.
In the first game, the Tritons fell behind 1-0 in the first, but quickly regained the lead with two runs in the second and third innings to lead 4-1. CSULA regained the lead in the third on a three-run homerun to lead 5-4 and knock starting pitcher Kirby St. John out of the game. UCSD responded in a big way with a two-run homerun by Garrett Imeson and a solo shot by Evan Kehoe pushed the Tritons ahead 7-5.
UCSD would never look back, adding two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to lead 10-5. Sean Greer pitched brilliantly in relief in his longest outing of the year. Greer went six innings of shut out baseball to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The second game was over in a hurry as the Golden Eagles scored 14 runs in the first two innings.
The Tritons ended up taking 3-of-4 from Cal State L.A., in a series in which none of the games were close. UCSD raised its team batting average from .274 to .302. UCSD hit at a .401 clip in the four games against the Golden Eagles. Five UCSD starters hit over .400 in the series, led by Evan Kehoe who went 11-for-17 (.647).
UCSD is back in action next week when it hits the road to face Sonoma State in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves are the defending CCAA and West Region champs.
