LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego softball team split a pair of games against defending national champion and CCAA foe Humboldt State on Friday, coming from behind to take game one 4-3, before falling 6-3 in the nightcap.
Jenni Habib stole home to cap off a two-out rally for the Tritons in the first game of the day, while freshman pitcher
Tess Granath earned her second win of the season.
With the split, UCSD now stands at 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the CCAA, while Humboldt State moves to 7-3 overall and 3-3 against league foes.
The Tritons scored two runs in the first inning of game one, taking advantage of an error by the Lumberjack's centerfielder. Habib drove in
Kristyn Lesovsky from second for the first run of the inning and starting pitcher
Lauren Chastain helped her own cause with an RBI single to center to make it 2-0.
Lindsay Warren led off the top of the third with a towering homerun to left center to bring Humboldt to within a run, but UCSD got it back in the bottom half of the frame, taking a 3-1 advantage when Habib scored from third on an error at first base.
With a runner on first the next inning, Warren got a hold of another pitch and drove it almost to the exact same spot, tying the game at 3-3 with her second homer of the day.
Granath relieved Chastain in the sixth and, after allowing a walk to start the inning, retired the final six batters in order to set up the Triton rally in the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs, Habib singled up the middle and then advanced to third on
Nicole Saari's double to deep center. Lumberjack starter Gracie Perez then put
Allison May on, loading the bases. With Chastain at the plate, Habib broke for home, caught Perez off guard, and scored easily, sewing up UCSD's second walk-off victory in the last three games.
Habib finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Saari also had three hits to lead UCSD at the plate.
Granath, who did not allow a hit in her two innings, improved to 2-0 on the season. Chastain allowed three runs on five hits in five innings of work. Perez (2-2) took the loss for the Lumberjacks, allowing four runs, two earned, in 6.2 innings.
UCSD struck first in the second game, taking an early 1-0 lead on
Jennifer DeFazio's sacrifice fly to left.
The Tritons held the one-run advantage until the top of the fifth, when Humboldt State scored three times to take a 3-1 lead. Geneva Perrine and Chrissy Motzny drove in runs for the Lumberjacks in the inning.
UCSD responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, as
Amanda Eliades' two-run single tied the game at 3-3.
But Humboldt's offense answered again, adding a run in the sixth on Natalie Galletly's double to left center, before back-to-back homeruns from Perrine and Motzny in the seventh put the game away, 6-3.
Nichole Parada (2-0) came on in relief of starter Jenna Anderson in the third inning and earned the victory for the Lumberjacks, allowing two runs on four hits in 4.2 innings of work.
Brittany Sheats, who pitched two thirds of an inning in relief took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the year.
Christine Zankich got the starting nod and then came back on to retire the final four outs of the game. She allowed two runs on seven hits.
The Tritons and Lumberjacks will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
