LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The No. 23 UC San Diego women's tennis team defeated the visiting No. 32 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday morning at the Northview Tennis Courts by a 5-0 score. The Tritons improved their record to 14-10 and will play BYU-Hawaii in the second round of the tournament. The Broncos conclude their season with a record of 7-10.
UCSD jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play putting the Tritons in dominant position to advance. In the No. 3 position, Justine Ang Fonte and Ina Dan took out Kaitlin Wooldridge and Jessica Winkler in routine fashion 8-0. Kimmi Dao and Valerie Tang defeated Fallon Blattner and Kara Fisher 8-3 in the No. 2 match and Taskeen Bains and Natalie Varnay ousted Jenny Tsai and Jennifer Chow 8-6 in the No. 1 position.
The Tritons added the final two points for the win from the No.5 and No. 6 singles matches. Triton Molly Sullens cruised to victory 6-0, 6-0 over Wooldridge at No. 5 while Tang deposed of Michelle Stock 6-1, 6-0. In the championship tournament, teams play to a decision leaving some matches unfinished.
This will be UCSD's 8th straight trip to the second round of the Division II Championship. The Tritons will next play at BYU-Hawaii, which advanced to the second round via a bye. The Seasiders are the No. 1 seed in the West region and are 25-0 on the season.
