SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. ? The 7th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team recorded a season-high 25 hits in a 16-7 win over San Francisco State in California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Friday afternoon at Maloney Field. The win was UCSD's 37th of the year (37-11, 21-8 CCAA), tying a school record for single-season wins. The Tritons also improved their road record to 15-2 in 2008. Seven different Tritons recorded multi-hit games, including freshman Evan Kehoe who went 6-for-7. Nick Burke recorded three hits and four RBI, while Tony Bonelli also hit safely in three at-bats.
Catcher Michael Benton went 4-for-5, while Chris Franco, Matt Cantele and Tim Mort had two hits apiece. Garrett Imeson went 1-for-4 with three RBI.
With Kehoe recording six hits, the San Diego native raised his team-leading average over 20 points. Kehoe entered the game with a .388 average and by the end of the day, Kehoe was up to .409.
It was the 10th consecutive victory for the Tritons over the Gators. San Francisco State drops to 7-39-1, 1-28 CCAA.
Kirby St. John (7-0) earned the victory, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing four runs while striking out seven. Nick Rodieck, Joe Raleigh and Eric Abraham finished out the victory.
The Tritons and Gators sailed through the first three innings at 0-0. UCSD broke through with a single run in the fourth to lead 1-0. UCSD would score five in the fifth and four in the sixth to break open the game. After the Gators broke through with four runs in the seventh, the Tritons scored three runs in each of the last two frames for their 16 runs. SFSU tacked on one in the eighth and two in the ninth to close out the scoring at 16-7.
In the Tritons' five-run fifth-inning, Burke had the big two-out hit for the Tritons, driving a triple for two RBI, giving UCSD a 6-0 lead.
Imeson had his only hit in the sixth-inning, a two-RBI double to extend the Triton lead.
UCSD and SFSU will take the pitch in a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in San Francisco. The series will conclude with a single game at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
