UCSD completes four-game CCAA series sweep; Defeats Cal State San Bernardino 3-2

No. 6 Tritons Use Long Ball in 6-2 Triumph over Cal State L.A.; Series Moves to La Jolla

LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The 6th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team defeated Cal State L.A. 6-2 on Friday afternoon at Reeder Field.  With the win, UCSD improves to 18-4, 8-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Golden Eagles drop to 9-12, 4-5 CCAA.  The Tritons delivered 14 hits, six of which went for extra bases.  Nick Burke hit a go-ahead solo homerun in the fifth and Matt Cantele hit a two-run homerun in the seventh.  Guido Knudson (3-1) earned the win, going seven innings and allowing two runs and six hits.  Tim Shibuya and Keith Noe pitched the final two frames of shutout ball.

 

UCSD got three hits apiece from Garrett Imeson, Chris Franco and Vance Albitz.  It was Albitz' second consecutive three-hit game in the series, raising his season batting average to a .413 mark. 

 

CSULA took the lead 1-0 after a solo homerun in the third, while UCSD tied the game with an unearned run in the fourth.

 

Burke hit his homerun in the fifth-inning, giving UCSD a 2-1 lead.

 

In the UCSD sixth, Imeson led off with a double and would come around and score on Evan Domanic's RBI double and the Tritons led 3-1.

 

In the UCSD seventh, Cantele hit his fourth homerun of the season and 41st of his career, giving UCSD a 5-1 lead.

 

CSULA made a push in the eighth inning as the first three batters reached.  While the Golden Eagles managed four hits in the frame, Shibuya came on in relief and limited CSULA to just one run and the Tritons remained ahead 5-2.

 

The Tritons added an insurance run in the ninth on an Imeson two-out single, making the final score 6-2.

 

UCSD head coach Dan O'Brien entered the year with 274 career wins.  With 18 victories this year, the Triton skipper is now up to 292 career wins.

 

UCSD and CSULA return to the field on Saturday, March 8 at Triton Baseball Field.  First pitch of the first game is slated for 11:00 a.m.
