SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? The 6th-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team posted a 7-2 victory over cross-town rival Point Loma Nazarene University on Wednesday afternoon on the PLNU campus. With the win the Tritons improve to 2-1 overall while dropping the Sea Lions down to 1-1 in 2008.
The Tritons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match as Blake Meister and Eric Rubens led the way at the top spot on the ladder with their 9-8 win over Jonathan Bowman and Joel Myers. Bijan Moallemi and Kazumi Negishi won at No. 2 by an 8-6 margin while Alex Edstrom and Armaun Emami notched an 8-3 victory in the final doubles match.
In singles play, Moallemi won in straight sets at No. 1 while Meister, Vincent Nguyen and Alex Whitmore captured the other three singles points in the bottom three matches. Both Meister and Whitmore won in three sets while Nguyen recorded a 6-4, 6-1 win over Landon Hilker.
Head coach Eric Steidlmayer and his squad will return to action in one week, opening up their home schedule on February 13th with a 2 p.m. match against West Region foe Cal Poly Pomona.
