LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 14th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team made it 3-of-4 when it defeated Barry 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field. With the win, the Tritons improve to 10-3, while the Buccaneers drop to 6-5. The Tritons did not get their first hit until the sixth inning, when they trailed 3-0. Tim Mort and Matt Cantele came through to start the rally and UCSD tied the game in the sixth. Chris Franco and Evan Kehoe recorded RBI's in the go-ahead eighth inning.
Matt Rossman earned the win, improving to 2-0 while Keith Noe pitched a perfect ninth for the save. Vance Albitz's hit streak came to an end in the game, going 0-for-3, however with a walk, he has still reached base in every game this season. Albitz had base hits in each of UCSD's previous 12 games this season.
In the Barry fourth, Andrew Frezza singled and stole two bases with one out. He would score on John Sirvidio's RBI single for the 1-0 lead. Barry would score three runs in the inning before an inning ending double play kept the score at 3-0 in the fourth.
In the UCSD sixth, Albitz led off with a walk and Mort singled through the left side for the Trtions' first hit. Cantele followed with a double off the right field wall for UCSD's first run of the game. With one out, a wild pitch scored Mort and Cantele advanced to third. Garrett Imeson came through with a single to center, tying the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, Mort led off with a single and stole second. Franco followed with a one out double down the left field line, giving UCSD the lead at 4-3. Kehoe singled through the left side with two outs, driving in an another run, giving UCSD a 5-3 lead through eight.
UCSD is back in action on Thursday, when it opens the 2008 CCAA slate. The Tritons will host Cal State San Bernardino with a first pitch of 2:00 p.m. at Triton Baseball Field.
