POMONA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego men's tennis team began its fall season at the 2008 Wilson/ITA Small College Regional Championships, hosted by Cal Poly Pomona. The Tritons have five student-athletes taking part in singles play as Brandon Stevenson and Naveen Dixit earned victories. Erik Elliot and Kazumi Negishi had first-round byes. Also competing for the Tritons is Vincent Nguyen who earned a doubles victory with Dixit.
Nguyen lost his singles match in a close 6-3, 6-4 decision to Andrew Khuri-Yakub of Sonoma State. Stevenson defeated Jonathon Przybyl of Grand Canyon 6-4, 6-1, while Dixit defeatd James Lee of Cal Poly Pomona 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action, Dixit and Nguyen defeated Jeremy Heckley and Andrew Khuri-Ykub of Sonoma State in Round One. Lau and Vachirajongkol of Cal Poly Pomona defeated the Triton duo of Dixit and Nguyen 8-5 in Round two.
Stevenson and Negishi defeated Lynch and Salazar of Western New Mexico 8-4 in round two.
If any of the UCSD student-athletes win either the singles or doubles tournament, they will advance on to the ITA National Championships.
