No. 15 Tritons Tame Tigers in Four

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The 15th-ranked UC San Diego men's volleyball team defeated Princeton 32-30, 24-30, 30-22, 30-27 on Wednesday night in RIMAC Arena.  The Tritons were paced by Jason Spangler's 23 kills and Frank Fritsch adding 17 kills.  UCSD outblocked Princeton 15.5 ? 10.0, as two late blocks in the fourth game helped the Tritons to the win.  UCSD improves to 3-5 while the Tigers drop to 0-1.  Princeton was led by Peter Eichler with 18 kills.  The Tritons return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play when it hosts Pepperdine on Friday night.  First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in RIMAC Arena.

 

Eric Leserman led UCSD with 14 digs and Gerald Houseman served up four aces, the final one coming on match-point.  Tyler Kern recorded a match-high seven blocks.

 

UCSD led 16-10 in game one, only to see Princeton chip away and tie the game at 27-27.  The Tritons would side out with a game point after a Kern kill.  Fritsch sent down the game ender at 32-30.

 

The second game was all Tigers as Princeton jumped out to a 20-11 lead.  The Tritons were able to make a game out of it, putting together a furious rally to come within 23-21 after a Joel Davidson and Kern block.  Down 24-22, the Tigers scored back-to-back points to open up a four point lead which proved to be the difference.  The Tigers took the game 30-24 on a Phlip Rosenberg kill.

 

The Tritons scored the first two points of the third game and never trailed.  Leading 14-13, UCSD scored six of the next seven points to pull away.  UCSD led by as many as 10 points at 28-18 and took the game 30-22 on a Fritsch service ace.

 

Game four was the closest game of the night as it featured 14 ties.  The final tie came at 26-26 before a UCSD triple block by Spangler, Houseman and Fritsch along with a Tiger attack error pushed UCSD ahead 28-26.  After a Princeton kill, UCSD scored on a Tiger service error and Houseman served up an ace to close out the match at 30-27.
