LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The 22nd-ranked UC San Diego baseball team's season ended with a 10-3 loss to No. 1 ranked Sonoma State on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles. UCSD finishes the season with a school-tying record of 37 wins and its first NCAA DII West Region appearance. Sonoma State advances and improves to 50-11. The Tritons took a 2-0 first-inning lead on a two-out double by Chris Franco for its only lead. SSU had three big innings, scoring three runs in the third, fourth and eighth innings for the win.
The Tritons got on the board first as Garrett Imeson was hit and Matt Cantele walked with one out. With two gone, Chris Franco doubled down the right field line, driving in two runs and giving UCSD a 2-0 lead after one.
In the SSU second, Trevor Decker walked the first two batters but got out of the jam without damage on a popout and two strikeouts.
SSU got on the board in the third with an RBI single by Tyler Wightman and trailed 2-1. SSU would take the lead on a two-run double by Chase McGuire and lead 3-2.
The Seawolves scored three more runs in the fourth, aided by a double by Leonardo Avila and a triple by David Adler to lead 6-2.
UCSD got a run back in the bottom half of the fourth on a sac fly by Tim Mort, driving in Bryan Silverman and UCSD trailed 6-3.
SSU got its insurance runs in the eighth with a three-run double by Tyrese McDaniel to lead 9-3.
The Tritons would strand two runners on base in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but could not get the big hit to tie up the game.
