LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? The 24th-ranked UC San Diego baseball team lost to 2nd-ranked Sonoma State 15-5 on Saturday in the CCAA Baseball Tournament Championship. UCSD scored three first inning runs, but SSU broke open a 4-4 game, scoring six times in the seventh inning to net a six-run lead. The Tritons had six players named to the All-Tournament team in Chris Franco, Garrett Imeson, Vance Albitz, Bryan Silverman, Matt Cantele and Trevor Decker. The loss drops UCSD to 37-23 and the Tritons will now await word on the announcement of the NCAA West Region postseason, announced on Sunday night.
In the UCSD first with one out, Garrett Imeson singled and Matt Cantele walked. David Morehead lined a double to left field, scoring Imeson for the 1-0 lead. Chris Franco grounded out to shortstop for UCSD's second run of the inning. With two outs, John Roth singled to right field and the Tritons were ahead 3-0 after the first.
SSU loaded the bases and scored a run without a hit in the second. SSU would end up with three runs in the inning off one hit, and the game was tied at 3-3.
With two outs in the SSU third, Chase McGuire had an RBI single up the middle, giving the Seawolves their first lead at 4-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Chris Franco led off with an opposite field double. Franco would advance to third on a wild pitch. After Bryan Silverman walked, Jonathan Erickson singled through the left side for an RBI, tying the game at 4-4.
In the top of the seventh, SSU put runners on the corners with no outs. SSU's Nosti hit a pinch hit RBI single, giving SSU the lead. SSU would go on to score six in the inning to take a 10-4 lead.
In the UCSD seventh, Imeson and Cantele hit back-to-back doubles and the Tritons had their fifth run.
SSU added two more runs in the eighth and three in the ninth for its 15 runs.
