CHICO, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team fell to No. 12 Chico State 16-4 on Sunday afternoon in Chico. Chico State takes 3-of-4 from the Tritons, and moves into third-place in conference as CSUC is now 38-9, 19-9 CCAA and the Tritons are 30-17, 19-9 CCAA. UCSD managed 11 hits on the afternoon and got off to a strong start as Matt Cantele's fifth inning homerun gave the Tritons a 3-1 lead. From that point, it was all Chico State as the Wildcats got a grand-slam as part of a seven-run fifth, pushing the Wildcats to the win. For the Tritons, Cantele and two hits, while David Morehead and Garrett Imeson also had two hits apiece. UCSD is back in action with a four-game series against Cal State Stanislaus on April 27-29. All games will be played at Triton Baseball Field.
The Tritons got on the board first as Morehead and Imeson led off with back-to-back singles in the second. After John Roth hit a sac bunt, Chris Franco's fielders choice led to the first run of the game.
Chico State tied it at 1-1 in the fourth, as Daniel Code hit a solo homerun, his first of two on the day.
In the Triton fifth, Cantele blasted his 20th homerun of the year, driving in Bryan Silverman and the Tritons led 3-1 in the fifth.
In the bottom half, the wheels came off for UCSD as Edgar Sedano belted a grand-slam as part of the seven-run fifth. CSUC led 8-3 through five.
The Wildcats kept hitting as CSUC added four runs each in the sixth and seventh innings.
In the Triton ninth, Vance Albitz hit an RBI groundout.
