LA JOLLA, Calif. - Aujanee Baldwin's three-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed out as Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to Alaska Anchorage, 49-48, in a quarterfinal game of the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball West Regional Championship at RIMAC Arena on the campus of UC San Diego.
Rebecca Kielpinski scored 13 points and Keyona Brooks had 12 to lead UAA, the No. 4 seed team in the tournament, into a semifinal game on Saturday against the winner of the UC San Diego-Western Washington contest.
It was a seesaw battle in the second half with teams taking turns making small runs and changing leads. Baldwin gave CSUDH a 48-47 lead with two minutes left to cap-off a 5-0 run. Kielpinski, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's player of the year, responded with a basket of her own with 41 seconds left to give UAA (23-5) the slight lead.
The Toros would turn the ball over on the ensuring possession before regaining control on a blocked-shot. Unable to call a timeout, CSUDH took the ball full court to find Baldwin setting up for the game's final shot.
Unique Bennett, who had 13 points in the first half, finished with a game-high 16 points. Baldwin finished with 10 while CSUDH's leading scorers of Brigayle Iglehart and Jessica Liang were held to a combined six points. Iglehart led the Toros with seven rebounds.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (16-11) went up 11-0 to start the contest behind the hot shooting of Bennett. Alaska Anchorage, on the other hand was ice cold, hitting just one of its first nine attempts. UAA managed to get back in the game with an 8-0 run before CSUDH's Bennett score back-to-back buckets. Moments later, Tenecia Lockard's layup sent the teams to the break even at 26-26.
The winner of the regional will advance to the Division II Women's Basketball Elite Eight, set for March 21-24 in Kearney, Neb. The West Region champion will face the winner of the East Region.
