PENSACOLA, Fla. ? The No. 13-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday, falling to No. 3 Armstrong Atlantic State by a narrow 5-4 margin on day four of the University of West Florida tournament. With the loss the Tritons fall to 12-5 on the season while the Pirates improved to 17-3.
AASU won two of the three doubles matches to take an early 2-1 lead. The two teams split the six singles matches with the Tritons winning at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 spots on the ladder.
Bijan Moallemi posted a three-set victory at the No. 2 slot while Brandon Low continued his good play of late, winning at the No. 4 spot in straight sets. Steven Oechel collected the Tritons other point, winning by scores of 6-0 and 6-4.
Christian Bergh got the match-winning point for the Pirates, defeating UCSD's Seth Spector in the No. 3 singles match. Bergh was perfect in the first set, winning by a 6-0 score before falling in the second set by a 6-4 margin. Bergh captured the match with a third set 6-2 win.
Head coach Eric Steidlmayer's Tritons return to the court on Sunday for their final match of the UWF Tournament, facing No. 4 Valdosta State. The match will be UCSD's fourth against a team ranked in the top-15 in the last five days.
