ROHNERT PARK, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team split its doubleheader against Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond. While the Tritons scored first in the first game, SSU shut out the Tritons the rest of the way, en route to a 6-1 Sonoma State win. In the second game, Matt Cantele hit his seventh homerun of the season to centerfield, good for two RBI and the Tritons held on in the final frame for the 5-3 win. Trevor Decker earned the win, while Derek Barham picked up his first save of the season. UCSD is now 12-7, 4-3 CCAA, while the Seawolves are 11-4, 6-1 CCAA.
In the first inning of the first game, John Roth led off with a single and stole second. With two outs, David Morehead came through with the RBI, giving UCSD a 1-0 lead.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the third, SSU's Collum hit a three-run homerun, which proved to be the difference maker in the game. SSU's Lysander was solid, pitching 8.0 innings, allowing one run, striking out seven and scattering seven hits.
In the second game, it was Cantele's blast in the third inning to centerfield, giving the Tritons the 3-0 lead.
In the final inning of the second game, the seventh inning, Garrett Imeson had an RBI on a fielders choice, giving UCSD a 5-2 lead. The run was an important one as SSU would score one run and put the potential tying runs on base in the final frame. Derek Barham got the final out on a flyball, as UCSD earned the 5-3 win.
UCSD and Sonoma State conclude the four-game series on Sunday afternoon, with a single game on Sunday, first pitch at 11:00 a.m. at Seawolf Diamond.
