UCSD Sweeps Saturday's Doubleheader at Triton Baseball Field

Chris Franco Belts Three Homeruns in Doubleheader Split with Hawai'i Pacific

LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team split a doubleheader with Hawai'i Pacific on Sunday afternoon at Triton Baseball Field.  The Sea Warriors won the first game by a 9-4 score as Matt Cantele and Chris Franco homered for UCSD in the loss.  In game two, UCSD won 12-3 as Franco blasted two more homeruns, a grand slam in the third and a two-run round-tripper in the fourth.  Hawai'i Pacific also hurt themselves with four errors in the second game.  Trevor Decker was the winning pitcher in game two, improving to 6-1 on the season.  UCSD is now 20-10, while the Sea Warriors are 16-10.  The teams will conclude the series with another doubleheader on Monday.  First pitch of the first game is slated for 11:00 a.m.

 

 

Game One

In the first inning, Michael Kealoha doubled and scored on Danny Lee's RBI single.  With the bases loaded, Spencer Omalza hit a sac fly, giving HPU a 2-0 lead in the first.

 

Vance Albitz led off the UCSD first with a single and would score on Matt Lawson's sac fly for UCSD's first run.

 

With two outs in the third, Matt Cantele hit his 11th homerun of the season to rightfield, tying the game at 2-2.

 

HPU took the lead in the fifth as Danny Lee hit a two-out RBI single, making the score 3-2 HPU.  With still two out, Spencer Omalza hit a double to left, clearing the bases and giving HPU a 7-2 lead.

 

HPU added two more runs in the seventh, taking a 9-2 lead.

 

In the UCSD ninth, Chris Franco hit a pinch-hit two-run homerun, making the final score 9-4.

 

Game Two

Tripper Chung gave HPU a 1-0 lead on an RBI ground out in the first.  With two outs, Johhny Gentry had an RBI single, giving the Sea Warriors a 2-0 edge.

 

With two outs in the UCSD first, Garrett Imeson came through with a two-out RBI single for the Tritons' first run.

 

In the UCSD third, Cantele walked and Matt Lawson singled through the left side.  With one out, Imeson doubled to center, tying the game at 2-2.  With the bases loaded, Chris Franco hit a grand slam to rightfield, pushing the Tritons ahead 6-2.

 

In the UCSD fourth with two outs and runners on the corners, an HPU error gave the Tritons a run to make the score 7-2 UCSD.  A third HPU error in the inning on John Roth's groundball scored two more Triton runs as UCSD led 9-2.  Franco then blasted a homerun to left for two RBI, and UCSD led 11-2.  In the inning, UCSD scored five runs on only one hit as three HPU errors made all the runs scored unearned.

 

In the UCSD fifth with two outs, David Morehead hit an RBI single, giving UCSD a 12-2 lead.

 

HPU's Dillon Guzman homered in the sixth, giving HPU its third run.
