LA JOLLA, Calif. — UC San Diego baseball dropped game two of the weekend series with Hawai'i, 6-3, on Friday night in Triton Ballpark. The Tritons' (13-13, 9-1 Big West) were held to just four hits, evening the series, 1-1, with the Rainbow Warriors (16-12, 6-8 Big West).
Anthony Potestio recorded one hit in five at bats, a double, and tallied two RBI, while
Nick Costello went 1-for-3, with a home run and a walk. In his first start of the season,
Ryson Ujimori knocked two hits in the contest.
Starter
Nic Gregson (0-6) pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits with one walk.
Jake Villar pitched 4.0 scoreless innings in relief, giving up four hits and one walk with one strikeout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hawai'i got ahead quickly, scoring two runs in the first and two in the second. The Rainbow Warriors knocked a two-run homer to open the ballgame and added runs on an RBI single and sac fly to lead, 4-0.
The Tritons left runners on in the first three innings, including bases loaded in the second. UC San Diego broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to right field by Costello. Hawai'i responded an inning later, scoring two runs on three hits and one error to lead, 6-1.
UC San Diego rallied one final time in the ninth inning, getting the two first batters on with no outs. Potestio doubled off the wall in left field, scoring both
Delshaun Lanier and
Drake Bicknell to make it 6-3. A sac bunt by
Michael Crossland advanced Potestio to third, but back-to-back fly-outs ended the rally and the game.
