Tritons Take Series with Aggies

UC San Diego secured a 3-2 victory in game two to win the series with UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. — UC San Diego baseball secured a 3-2 victory over UC Davis in game two of the series on Saturday evening at Dobbins Stadium. The Tritons (11-13, 7-1 Big West) broke up a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning to take the second game and secure the series over the Aggies (11-13, 5-6 Big West).

Starter Nic Gregson matched his season long, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Nathan Huy secured one out in the seventh, before Devon King (1-0) closed out the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run. King recorded two strikeouts and one walk, without allowing a hit to earn his first victory of the season.

Alex Leopard recorded the only multi-hit performance for the Tritons, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Trevian Martinez recorded a double, an RBI and two walks, while J.C. Allen finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons were quick to get on the board, scoring two runs in the top of the first with two outs. Back-to-back walks put runners in scoring position for Leopard who singled through the right side to score Camacho from second. Martinez followed with a double to left field to score Allen from second and give UC San Diego a 2-0 advantage.

UC Davis answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring one run on a single through the left side. With two on and one out, Gregson forced a fly-out to center field and recorded a strikeout to limit the damage.

The Aggies tied the game in the third inning via an RBI single through the right side to make it 2-2. UC San Diego stranded two runners for Davis in the fourth and one runner in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, keeping the game locked at 2-all.

The Tritons were retired in order in the second, third and seventh innings before rallying in the eighth. UC San Diego loaded the bases with one out via three straight walks. An infield ground-out by Costello plated the go-ahead run with two outs, but the Tritons were unable to add any more. A fly-out to the warning track by Addison Klepsch ended the inning with the bases still loaded and the visitors in front, 3-2.

King and the Tritons retired the Aggies in order in the eighth and ninth innings, include two strikeouts to secure the victory.
