ROHNERT PARK, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team lost its series opener to Sonoma State 4-2 on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond. The Tritons drop to 11-6, 3-2 CCAA, while the Seawolves improve to 10-3, 5-0 CCAA. SSU scored three times in the fourth and added another in the sixth, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Chris Franco tripled and scored for UCSD's first run in the seventh and UCSD did put a final push in the ninth with three singles. SSU got the final outs to retire the side with the potential tying runs on base. Jonathan Erickson had UCSD's only RBI on the afternoon. Nick Rodieck pitched four innings of relief, allowing one run and striking out four.
Sonoma State scored the first runs of the game on a two-run homerun by Rimes. SSU would score one more run and load the bases with one out. UCSD got out of the inning on a double play ball, ending the inning without further damage at 3-0 SSU.
With one out in the seventh, Franco tripled to center. Bryan Silverman then struck out and reached first on the wild pitch and Franco would score. UCSD would add another single in the inning, but could not get any runs home and trailed 4-1 through seven.
In the UCSD ninth with one out, Franco and Mort hit back-to-back singles. Erickson then singled, driving in Franco. Erickson was gunned down by the rightfielder, trying to stretch the single to a double for the second out of the inning. The side was then retired and SSU won 4-2.
