LA JOLLA, Calif. ? The UC San Diego baseball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday afternoon. UCSD dropped its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener by a 4-3 score at Scolinos Field on the Cal Poly Pomona campus. UCSD took its only lead of the game in the first as Scott Clement hit a sac fly RBI. The Tritons put the potential tying runs on in the eighth, but could not get the tying run in. UCSD drops to 8-5, 0-1 CCAA, while Cal Poly Pomona improves to 7-4, 1-0 CCAA). Chris Franco and Tim Mort also had RBI for the Tritons. Kirby St. John pitched five innings and suffered his first loss of the season.
While Clement and Franco hit sac fly RBI's in the first and eight innings, respectively, UCSD got its other run in the fourth. David Morehead led off with a single and advanced to third on an error. Mort then picked up his RBI on a groundout, scoring Morehead and bringing UCSD within 3-2 at the time.
UCSD and Cal Poly Pomona square off in game two of the four-game series on Friday, February 23. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. on the Pomona campus.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday at Triton Baseball Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 11:00 a.m.
