MOBILE, Ala. ? UC San Diego seniors Blake Meister and Eric Rubens captured the Division II Doubles Championship on Friday at the ITA Small College Championships presented by Outback Steakhouse and the USTA at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile. The Triton tandem defeated Dagoberto Darezzo and Edward Horne of USC-Aiken by scores of 7-6, 3-6 and 10-8 to capture the title.
Meister and Rubens advanced to the finals after posting a 7-5, 7-5 victory over the duo of Ryan Hudson and Juan Nunez of Abilene Christian during their semifinal match earlier in the day.
The D-II Doubles Championship places Meister and Rubens into the ITA Small College Doubles Super Bowl where they will face the D-III champion on Saturday morning. The winner of that match will play for the overall title on Sunday morning against the winner of the NAIA and JUCO Champions match.
In singles play, UCSD sophomore Bijan Moallemi played his first consolation match in which he registered a three-set victory over Robert Jendelund of Armstrong Atlantic State. After dropping the first set by a 6-4 margin, Moallemi would bounce back for wins by 6-3 and 6-4 scores in the final two sets.
The victory advances Moallemi to the 5th place singles match where he will face William Jacome of Nebraska-Kearney at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
UCSD head coach Eric Steidlmayer and his full team will return to action on Saturday, October 20th, hosting the annual Alumni Day Tournament. The festivities on Alumni Day are slated to begin at 10 a.m. at the Northview Tennis Courts.
